Joseph Black
Joseph Black lives and works at his studio in Kent. He trained at Camberwell College of Art, graduating with a BA Hons in painting in 2015, followed by a Masters Degree in the History of Art from The Courtauld Institute of Art in 2016.
Joseph Black’s work combines technical precision with a poetic and tranquil sensibility. His paintings show the product of an immense scrutiny into detail and natural form, underpinned by an elegant simplicity and focus on composition. Using a muted and subdued palette, he isolates his subject against simple backgrounds allowing for an interplay of colour and atmosphere, bringing together objects, space and simplicity to find meaning and metaphors in the natural world around us.
Joseph Black’s work conveys a quiet and eternal atmosphere, where the timeless and ephemeral meet. His peaceful and spellbinding works make striking use of stillness, movement, and time; underscoring meticulous attention to surfaces and scale. With this serene ambience, Black’s paintings offer a truly remarkable experience rooted in a timeless and beautifully honest simplicity.
Joseph Black currently exhibits with Jonathan Cooper Gallery in London and works to produce designs for leading fashion brand Hermès in Paris.
