Martin Rosefeldt : The End of England Teaser
As a filmmaker and scriptwriter I constantly move between fiction, art and documentary. Since over 20 years I portray buildings, landscapes, artists, intellectuals and ordinary people in Europe and elsewhere in the world, mostly for German French TV ARTE. When I approach a place, situation or a person I often think about a poetic way to bring out its essence through image and sound. Improvisation and spontaneity are equally important, as I like to be surprised by the moment that often adds precious, unexpected detail to a film. In recent years I have portrayed cities all over Europe through the lense of artists and intellectuals (Linz, Sarajevo, Erewan, Sheffield, Belfast, Derry/Londonderry, Oslo among others). It is through their special craft and view onto their hometown that I tried to catch the soul and heart of a city as well as I tried to understand their architecture and landscapes.
In 2017 I discovered Dover through graffiti artist Banksy when I was commissioned by German French cultural TV ARTE to film a report on it and the Dovorians relationship regarding its political message. Since then I have returned several times to start a documentary on the town, its history, its inhabitants and its unique landscape and architecture. In 2019 I filmed a workshop dealing with the wounds and trauma of Dover.
