DAD RADIO #15 | Between Beacon and Shaft

In an extended hour-long DAD RADIO special for the DAD Digital Festival programme, DAD is delighted to have broadcast the full-length radio adaptation of our legacy work Entre Phare et Shaft/ Between Beacon and Shaft on DCR FM, written by French writer & storyteller Nicolette Picheral and performed with the late Dover-based electric guitarist Colin Hinds in September 2013.

Including storytelling and guitar, Between Beacon and Shaft is a fable about maritime borders, in particular the Straits of Dover, weaving together quotes from historical archives and stories about the English Channel with a mysterious beacon/shaft inspired by The Grand Shaft in Dover and the Lighthouse of Dunkirk.

A Compagnie Par Le Mot! production for the Dunkirk Capital of Culture 2013, Between Beacon and Shaft was originally presented by DAD in English in Dover’s Drop Redoubt & Grand Shaft and in French in the Lighthouse of Dunkirk, in collaboration with the City of Dunkirk and the Dunkirk Portuaire Museum, Dover Museum and The Western Heights Preservation Society. The production was supported by the convention between the French Institute and the Région du Nord-Pas-de-Calais as well as Dover Arts Development’s WAR & PEACE Programme.
