After the Black Gold revisited
Participants at the two open and free branding sessions were invited to make their mark with their own mining-inspired scorched or chiselled wooden tile to add to the After the Black Gold Sculpture at Woolage Village and celebrated on March 18th 2023. The sessions were led by Cormac Martin and Charlotte Chapman
the project offered an opportunity to immerse ourselves with a broad spectrum of the community , after getting a deep and informative insights from ex miners and families connected to the mines at the Aylesham Miners Museum , the two workshops were well attended and I was so impressed with both the skill people expressed but also the passion and enthusiasm for the subject matter , whether participants were connected through family to the mines or were inspired by the opportunity to creatively express imagery and memorabilia, poems and artefacts , the reconnections to the great mining era and shared memories as well as new stories and understanding of the hard work and importance of mining in the Kent Coalfields.
I feel both humbled and very proud to have been involved in this project, which has been both a wonderful insight to the past , but a great inspiration for the future. Cormac Martin
It was wonderful delivering these sessions with Cormac Martin. We had a huge cross section of the community attending and ages from as young as 3 to 80+.
It was a joy to see everyone have a go and even more wonderful to see participants turn up on the day for the event to see their artwork on the sculpture.
I have laughed a lot and been moved to tears seeing and hearing personal stories of the mining community. Charlotte Chapman
It was impressive the amount of concentrated time each participant of every age brought to their individual art work. At the end of both workshops there were 46 tiles which were installed on the After the Black Gold sculpture at Woolage Village on March 17th 2023 the day before the final event.
Many thanks to the Aylesham workshop Trust and the Two Sawyers Pub at Woolage Green for hosting the sessions.
