DAD RADIO #20 | Folkestone Triennial 2021

The 20th episode of DAD RADIO explores works from this year’s Folkestone Triennial 2021, the UK’s largest exhibition of newly commissioned contemporary public artwork.

DAD RADIO curators Louisa Love + Louise Webb share coverage from their visit to the triennial during October, exploring some of this year’s commissions with those who have perhaps spent more time than anyone with the artworks – the Folkestone Triennial Hosts. They discuss the works of Shezad Dawood (The Terrarium), Jacqueline Donachie (Beautiful Sunday), Morag Myerscough (Flock of Seagulls Bag of Stolen Chips), Sam Belinfante (On the Circulation of Blood) and genuinefake (FORTUNE HERE) which all contribute unique dialogues and spaces for exploration of 2021’s triennial thematic ’The Plot’.

‘The Plot’, the fifth edition of Folkestone Triennial curated by Lewis Biggs, invites visitors to consider urban myths and their relation to verifiable realities, the gap between story and actuality. It does so through engaging with 3 historic narratives and intersecting routes through Folkestone: the St Eanswythe watercourse, physician William Harvey’s discovery of the circulation of blood, and Folkestone’s industrial road known as ‘The Milky way’. Referring to passages of movement – of water, blood and goods – and the artworks installed along these routes encourage us to consider questions around the universal need to distinguish reality from myth, the gap between narrated and lived experience, and what ‘place-making’ really means.

With thanks to Creative Folkestone and Triennial Hosts Gavin, Elly, James, Dave and Ed.

Curated, presented and produced by Louisa Love + Louise Webb for the DAD Digital Festival 2021 at www.dadonline.uk, funded by Arts Council England. First broadcast on Dover Community Radio (DCR FM) on 29th October 2021.
