Alma Tischler Wood was commissioned to create a work to mark the new finish of the North Downs Way National Trail on Dover’s Sea Front.

DAD  also worked with local school pupils and residents to raise awareness of the North Downs Way Trail and promote the health aspects of walking and interest in the Tonkin Liu design for the Esplanade in which the marker will be integrated.

The purpose of the marker is to

• mark the end point for those who have walked the entire North Downs Way from Farnham, whether via Folkestone or Canterbury;
• make more people aware of the North Downs Way;
• make people aware of the  North Downs Way links to Europe;
• make people aware of other promoted routes around SE Kent including the  Saxon Shore Way;
• make more people aware of the pilgrimage route – the Via Francigena from Canterbury to Rome and the pilgrimage element generally of the North Downs Way;
• inspire people to use and enjoy the trail, whether for short or long walks;
• highlight and reflect the varied  landscapes, heritage and  wildlife to which the path gives access along its whole 153-mile length;
• provide a photo opportunity for walkers and visitors;
• enhance the health and well-being of local residents and visitors by encouraging use of the National Trail and walking in general.
