Explorers Walk Leaders explore the West Wing Battery
The Explorers
On February 3rd 2019 Philip Hutton, Andy Rayner, Simon Bill, Sangeeta and Karina Gurung, the Explorers walk leaders, met for an exploratory preparatory walk at the West Wing Battery. Ranger Paul Sampson and conservation architect James Wood were there to share their knowledge of the West Wing Battery and its surroundings. Also present were John Orchard from Albion Inc, who was taking photographs and recording podcasts, the Pioneering places project evaluator Karen Pamplin-Browne, who was testing some feedback forms and Amanda Jayne, who is assisting DAD with one of the walks. Charles Holland (CHA) and Joanna Jones (DAD) were there to answer any questions the experts had with planning their walk and to clarify dates and procedures that need to be in place leading up to the walks.
There was a buzz of excitment as the Explorers took in this extraordinary ‘hidden’ place on one of the most beautiful days so far of 2019

Sunday March 3rd Andy Rayner (Military historian specialising in Victorian forts)
Sunday March 17th Simon Bill (artist)
Sunday March 31st Sangita and Karuna Gurung (Walking as an everyday activity)
The walks will start at 10am and generally last 2 – 2.5 hours
The walks will have some steep hills and some muddy paths.
Please bring something to drink.
Please wear sturdy boots and bring appropriate clothing for all weathers.
The Explorers programme is part of Pioneering Places East Kent: Dover developed by Dover Arts Development and Charles Holland Architects to support the conservation and opening up of the West Wing Battery of Fort Burgoyne through art led community engagement
Pioneering Places is part of the national Great Place Scheme, an ambitious project that will make East Kent an even better place to live, work and visit by exploring heritage, developing civic pride and connecting artists and communities. Four projects in Canterbury, Dover, Folkestone and Ramsgate are being led by cultural organisations to encourage local people to get involved and shape the place where they live. Supported through Arts Council England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, with Historic England and Artswork, the South East Bridge.
