‘Everyone’s a Winner’ added to the Chalkup21 trail

CHALKUP21

A Tenth structure to add to CHALKUP21

CHALKUP21 highlights fine examples of 21st century art & architecture that have been built along the Strait of Dover this century.

This coastal walking trail was imagined by Dover Arts Development in 2017 to raise awareness of the exceptional quality of nine works on the 17 mile stretch between Capel le Ferne and Deal. With the “Winners Bench”, that has just been installed, it will be ten.

CHALKUP21 has its own Facebook page, Instagram and website with information about the buildings the architects as well as useful information for walkers.

The winners bench with the Latin inscription VICTORES SUMUS OMNES, “Everyone’s A Winner” complements my “START/FINISH” line and the cast-iron map installed over 10 years ago as a marker for the North Downs Way.

Latin was the language spoken in the Middle Ages when the Via Francigena pilgrims route was founded. If you look up the inscription, VICTORES SUMUS OMNES, you might smile and realise that it literally means “Winners are we all”.

The bench is meant for resting, standing up, meeting your friends and enjoying the magnificent view of land and sea at the esplanade in Dover. Maybe one or two will decide to pose as winners and unwittingly become a living tableau and part of the sculpture.

I hope that my work will encourage visitors to look more closely at the world around them.
