Sergey Novikov

Sergey Novikov is a Photographer and visual artist.

My work examines the economies, infrastructures, and systems of power that shape territories and societies. Combining documentary photography with staged interventions and re-enactments of the visual markers of modernity, I investigate the hidden mechanisms through which property, capital, and political authority operate. My projects have touched topics of Russia’s secret “ZATO” towns; resource dependency and extractive economies in Russia, Inc.; transnational money-laundering in Closer than Switzerland; and the little-seen institutions and processes that structure power across the former Soviet Union in Infrastructures. Ongoing works include studies of urban gentrification in Gentrifying London and observations of maritime economy in Grey Fleet.

My recent projects in the form of photobooks were shortlisted for the BOPFOLIO Bristol, 2024, Images Vevey Dummy Award 2019 and 2021, the Luma Rencontres Dummy Book Award Arles in 2016 and 2017, the Photobookfest Moscow Dummy Award 2017 and 2018, the Anamorphosis Prize 2016.

My work is held in institutional and private collections including MAMM, The Lumiere Brothers Center for Photography; MOMA and Garage Museum of Contemporary Art libraries.
