Embarkation

During his residency in Dover Bazin researched and photographed the life of Dover’s container port and Sea France ferries, the ‘hidden’ activities of dockers and freight transport. From the perspective of an artist who has worked in Calais, he is keen to position himself ‘on the other side’, on the other shore that so many travellers in France yearn to reach.

Philippe Bazin lives in Paris and teaches photography and visual arts at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Valenciennes. He is also a professional associate at l’Université de Valenciennes, Institut des Sciences et Techniques, Audiovisual department. His work is represented by Galerie Anne Barrault, Paris and he exhibits widely in solo and group exhibitions internationally.Bazin’s photographic practice has encompassed a range of subject matter. In the mid 1990s, he focused on the buman face interpreted through large format black and white images of the elderly, newborns, adolescents and prisoners. His recent work is informed by the natural and urban landscapes which have been realised through projects in Portugal, Scotland, Albania, Northern Cyprus and Taiwan. Bazin’s focus has been to explore the interconnection between the processes of work and their spectacle, creating a sense of the monumental from everyday activities.
