Aya Haider works with Samphire Project

DAD linked artist Aya Haider with the Samphire Project for their work with the 2024 Refugee week theme – OUR HOME – at Guston Primary School. Guston Primary School has a mix of ethnicities with children from the long standing local Nepalese Community as well as more recently children who have arrived from Afganistan.

Samphire is the Dover-based charity that works to create a society which is inclusive and compassionate towards migrants.

The work with Aya Haider to the theme of – OUR HOME – took the form of delicate detailed embroideries by the children  who turned their drawings into stitch in two sesssions at the beginning of June 2024 and were shown at Samphire’s Multi Cultural Festival in Pencester Gardens on July 29th 2024.

Aya was great – her personal stories about the different forms that home can take – where you live, where your family are from, where you feel a connection to – really helped the children. She discussed artworks with the class including some of her own work, and set the children achievable but challenging goals. The artworks they produced look brilliant and each interpretation of home was totally different.
